- 4× annual base salary, paid to your beneficiaries if you die while employed, up to age 70
- Non-medical limit: €900,000
-
Income Protection (long-term disability):
- If you can't work because of long-term illness or injury, it pays 75% of your salary, less State Illness Benefit
- Payments start after 13 weeks of continuous absence
- Payments increase by 3% a year while you're claiming
- Paid until you recover or reach age 68
- Non-medical limit: €75,000
- Includes premium protection, so your pension contributions continue during a claim Coverage begins from day one of employment.
-
Actively at work: to be covered from day one, you must be actively at work on the date cover starts, meaning you're working your normal hours and haven't been told by a doctor to stop working. Statutory leave such as maternity or parental leave still counts as being at work.
-
Above the non-medical limits (€900,000 life cover, €75,000 a year income protection), Irish Life needs medical underwriting before the extra cover applies.
-
Beneficiaries: you can nominate who receives your life benefit through the Irish Life member portal, or by sending an Expression of Wishes form to Irish Life. Contact benefits@toku.com if you need help.
Summary of Pension & Retirement Savings
In Ireland, you'll save for retirement through one of two plans. You can only be in one at a time:
- My Future Fund is the Government's auto-enrolment scheme. If you're eligible, you're enrolled automatically. You don't need to do anything.
- The Irish Life pension is Toku's own workplace pension. You opt in. The employer contribution is higher and you get tax relief. If you join it, you leave My Future Fund. Your life and income protection cover stays the same whichever plan you're in.
My Future Fund vs. Irish Life Pension
| My Future Fund (automatic) | Irish Life Pension (opt in) | |
|---|---|---|
| How you join | Automatic if you're aged 23 - 60 and earn €20,000+ a year | Email benefits@toku.com |
| Your contribution | 1.5% of pay (2026 - 2028), rising in steps to 6% by 2035 | Up to 6% of salary, plus optional extra contributions (AVCs) |
| Employer contribution | Matches you: 1.5% now, rising to 6% by 2035. Only paid on earnings up to €80,000 | Matches your contribution up to 6% of salary from day one |
| Government contribution | €1 for every €3 you pay (0.5% of pay now, rising to 2%). Only paid on earnings up to €80,000 | None. You get tax relief instead |
| Tax relief on your contributions | None | At your marginal rate (20% or 40%) |
| Managing your account | Through MyFutureFund.ie | Through the MyIrishLife app (see resources below) |
Example on a €60,000 salary: in My Future Fund, the employer puts in €900 a year in 2026. In the Irish Life pension, if you pay 6%, Toku adds €3,600 a year.
My Future Fund (Automatic Enrolment)
- Who's enrolled: employees aged 23 - 60 who earn €20,000+ a year and aren't already paying into a pension through payroll.
- Contributions: taken from your pay through payroll. Toku matches what you pay and the Government adds a top-up. Rates increase every three years:
| Years | You | Employer | Government |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 - 2028 | 1.5% | 1.5% | 0.5% |
| 2029 - 2031 | 3% | 3% | 1% |
| 2032 - 2034 | 4.5% | 4.5% | 1.5% |
| 2035 onwards | 6% | 6% | 2% |
- €80,000 cap: if you earn more than €80,000, you stay enrolled. The employer and Government contributions are only calculated on the first €80,000 of your earnings.
- Opting out: you must stay in for at least 6 months. After that, you can opt out during months 7 - 8 and get a refund of your own contributions. The employer and Government contributions stay in your fund. You'll be re-enrolled automatically after 2 years if you're still eligible.
- Pausing: after 6 months you can pause your contributions at any time.
- Opting out or pausing is done directly with My Future Fund, not through Toku. Learn more at MyFutureFund.ie or Citizens Information.
Irish Life Pension (Toku Workplace Pension)
- What it is: a defined contribution pension through the Irish Life Empower Master Trust. Your money is invested and builds up until you retire.
- Same terms for everyone: the plan terms are the same for every Toku employee in Ireland, so the employer contribution can't be set differently for an individual.
- Employer contribution: Toku matches what you pay, up to 6% of your salary. For example, if you pay 6%, Toku adds another 6%.
- Charges: 100% of your contributions are invested, with no entry or exit charge. The only charge on your fund is an annual fund management charge of 0.65% (Empower Personal Lifestyle Strategy and its underlying funds). Toku pays the yearly administration and Pensions Authority fees, so they don't come out of your pension.
- Paying in extra (AVCs): you can make Additional Voluntary Contributions (AVCs) on top of your regular contribution to boost your savings. AVCs get the same tax relief, within the Revenue limits below. Toku doesn't match AVCs. To start, change or stop AVCs, email benefits@toku.com.
- How to join:
- Email benefits@toku.com to say you'd like to join.
- We'll send you the Irish Life application form. Complete it and upload it to your Toku profile.
- Contributions start through payroll once Irish Life confirms your membership. We'll let you know when.
- Joining when you start: if you join before your first payroll, you won't be enrolled in My Future Fund at all.
- Switching from My Future Fund: once your Irish Life contributions start through payroll, your My Future Fund contributions stop. Any money already in your My Future Fund stays invested there for you.
Tax Advantages (Irish Life Pension)
- Tax relief on your contributions at your marginal rate (20% or 40%). For example, a €100 contribution costs a higher-rate taxpayer €60.
- Employer contributions are not a taxable benefit for you.
- Investment growth is tax-free while your money is in the pension.
- At retirement, you can usually take part of your fund as a tax-free lump sum, subject to Revenue limits.
- Limits: the amount you pay that qualifies for tax relief depends on your age: 15% of earnings under 30, 20% at 30 - 39, 25% at 40 - 49, 30% at 50 - 54, 35% at 55 - 59 and 40% at 60+. Earnings above €115,000 a year don't count toward this limit.
